above the crashing surf of Hulopo'e Bay, The Challenge at Manele
is an outstanding Lanai golf course that more than lives up to its
name. Built on lava outcroppings, the course features three holes
on cliffs which use the Pacific Ocean as a water hazard. The five-tee
concept challenges the best golfers – tee shots over natural gorges
and ravines must be precise. This dramatic, unspoiled natural terrain
is a stunning backdrop, and every hole offers majestic ocean views.
During the winter, you may even catch spectacular sightings of whales
right from the fairways. The
signature hole is the #12 (also the scene of Bill Gate's wedding),
a beautiful par 3, in which you tee off from a cliff over the ocean
with the green located on another cliff. The carry on this hole
from the men's tee is about 185 yards. From the championship tee
it requires a 202 yard tee shot to reach the green. Hole #17 is
another beautiful hole, with a 215-yard carry over the ocean from
the back tee. The course has several blind tee and approach shots.
There are several sand bunkers on the course, a few constructed
with multiple fingers. Hole #16, a 458-yard, par 4, has a sand bunker
in the middle of the fairway. |
